Concert - The Swedish Royal Navy Band

Concert - The Swedish Royal Navy Band

Welcome to the evening concert on Friday, November 20, at 7:00 p.m. in Sparresalen. The evening’s main work is “Four Sea Interludes” from the opera Peter Grimes, Benjamin Britten’s first major operatic success. The orchestral suite consists of four interludes that depict the sea—its beauty, power, and unpredictability—and serve as musical windows into the opera’s dramatic narrative.

Alexander Hanson - Conductor
Erik Strandberg - Bassoon

In addition to *Four Sea Interludes*, we’ll have the pleasure of hearing the band’s bassoonist, Erik Strandberg, perform as soloist in Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto. The concerto is a true Rococo gem and the most frequently performed solo concerto for bassoon in the world. It offers a delightful blend of technical brilliance, deep, warm tones, and the playful humor that characterizes Mozart’s music for woodwinds.

The evening’s program also features more contemporary works, including *Coastal Observations* by Joel Lindberg—a piece that, through five lighthouses along the Swedish coast, allows the audience to experience the coastal landscape from a contemporary musical perspective. All under the direction of Music Director Alexander Hanson.

From the program:
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy – Overture to The Hebrides, Op. 26
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major, K. 191
Joel Lindberg – Kustobservationer
Benjamin Britten – Four Sea Interludes from *Peter Grimes*
