Exhibition - Kjell Hobjer's Life Journey – Lots of Kjell and a Little Allan
On June 4, the Karlskrona Porcelain Museum will open a new themed exhibition dedicated to one of Blekinge’s most beloved and distinctive artists—Kjell Hobjer.
The exhibition *Kjell Hobjer’s Life Journey – Much Kjell and a Little Allan* is based on Göran Bergvall’s private collection of art and memorabilia from the 40 years he knew the artist.
The exhibition features Kjell Hobjer’s well-known paintings and the characteristic “little men” that became his trademark, but we also find sculptures and memorabilia that offer a closer look at the man behind the art. Visitors can also explore the family’s artistic history through his father Allan Hobjer’s imaginative scrap metal sculptures.
Kjell Hobjer created a visual language all his own, filled with color, expression, and human stories. His art touched on themes such as everyday life, loneliness, community, and the contemporary world. Behind the colorful figures often lay a sharp social commentary and a profound human experience. The old men stare back at the viewer—sometimes accusingly, sometimes sadly, but always vividly.
Kjell Hobjer made his debut at the age of 14 and later studied at the Gerlesborg School, Idun Lovén’s painting school, and the Orrefors Glass School. Although he was primarily a painter, he worked in many different materials, including glass and metal. He always signed his works, often with witty poems or short phrases on the back of the piece.
Throughout his long artistic career, his distinctive and expressive art was celebrated by renowned fellow artists as well as cultural critics and art connoisseurs. Kjell Hobjer passed away just over a year ago at the age of 73, following an illness.
The exhibition tells the story of a life marked by creativity, tenacity, and a deep joy in creating—and of an artist who has left a lasting mark on Swedish art and in the hearts of many people.
