Guided tour - Cosy Gathering at Dusk at Drottningskär Citadel

Guided tour in Swedish - Join us for an exciting and unique tour of Drottningskär Castle during the World Heritage Festival and fall break, on Friday, October 30, at 3:45 p.m.

Drottningskär Fortress is considered one of the finest examples of Swedish fortification, featuring innovative fortification techniques developed by the military and architect Erik Dahlbergh. Construction of the coastal fortress began in conjunction with the establishment of the new naval base at Karlskrona in 1680. Since defending the entrance to the naval harbor was of the utmost importance, fortifications were needed on the two islands of Tjurkö and Aspö; thus, Kungsholm Fort and Drottningskär were built on either side of the entrance.

Join us for a twilight walk through Drottningskär Citadel, where we’ll hear about events in the castle’s history featuring people from different social classes and regions of Sweden. Meet Erik Dahlbergh, Constable Erik Ahlrot and his wife Helena Eriksdotter, the prisoner Brokul in the dungeon, and Army Corporal Anders Andersson from the Närke/Värmland Regiment. On the citadel’s middle floor, known as “the church,” we’ll hear about Pastor Westelius, who fought against the plague, and on the top floor, the battery level, we’ll learn about cannons from the 17th and 18th centuries as well as the soldiers who were quartered there during World War I.
