Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s musical interpretation premiered on December 18, 1892, in Saint Petersburg, with choreography by Lev Ivanov, and has enchanted both children and adults ever since.
Classical ballet has often been praised by critics around the world. But an old saying goes: “It is better to see something once than to hear about it a hundred times.”
Experience the wonderful ballet The Nutcracker with the International Festival Ballet and Festival Orchestra.
At the heart of the story is Marie. On Christmas Eve, she receives a nutcracker as a gift from her godfather Drosselmeyer. As she falls asleep, she dreams of a battle between toy soldiers led by the Nutcracker and the Mouse King’s army. With Marie’s help, the Nutcracker wins and is then transformed into a prince.
The prince travels with Marie to the Land of Sweets. Their journey passes through a sparkling fir forest to the palace of Zuckerburg, where the ruling Sugar Plum Fairy hosts a celebration in honor of her guests.
The magnificent set design by the brilliant theatre designer Vyacheslav Okunev— who has worked with the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg and La Scala in Milan — together with the lavish costumes and the International Festival Ballet ensemble’s boundless elegance and lightness of expression, create a dreamlike and enchanting version of the classical ballet that continues to captivate audiences more than 100 years later.
