OPENING AT BLEKINGE MUSEUM - Captured in color, snapshots from a bygone Karlskrona
This year's summer exhibition at Blekinge Museum is now open!
Paavo Lindquist served as the city gardener of Karlskrona during the 1930s through the 1950s. Through his camera, he gave us the first vivid color portrait of the city.
At a time when old photographs can be colorized with just a few clicks and AI, this exhibition presents genuine historical color photographs. When Agfa and Kodak introduced their first color films in the 1930s, Paavo quickly embraced the new technology. He left black-and-white film behind and began documenting the city’s parks, flower beds, and green spaces in entirely new shades. For a passionate photographer like Paavo, color film must have felt revolutionary - suddenly, the city’s floral splendor and everyday life could be captured exactly as they were experienced.
With camera in hand, he immortalized everything from blooming arrangements in Hoglands Park to newly built playgrounds and sporting events throughout the city. What for him was a practical work tool has today become something much greater: a unique journey back in time to a Karlskrona where, for the first time, the city’s history can be experienced in color.
The summer exhibition will be on display from June 12 to October 18.
