About the program
Under the direction of music director Alexander Hanson, an ensemble from the Navy Band performs Mozart's Gran Partita, one of classical music's most beloved works. Gran Partita, formally known as Serenade No. 10 in B flat major, K. 361, is a grand and lyrical serenade for thirteen musicians, filled with playfulness, contrasts, and virtuosity mixed with infectious melodies.
The title Gran Partita (which literally means The Great Serenade) was not given by Mozart himself but was added much later, probably to emphasize the piece's unusually large instrumentation and ambitious scope, comprising seven movements.
The work was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart during his first years in Vienna, between the opera The Abduction from the Seraglio and the three Da Ponte operas The Marriage of Figaro, Cosi fan tutte, and Don Giovanni. Gran Partita demonstrates Mozart's ability to combine virtuosity with subtle interplay and a rich palette of sounds. The work alternates between festive and playful movements and quiet, almost poetic passages, taking the audience on a journey through Mozart's captivating musical universe.
