Villa utsigten in Lyckeby - a garden show

Every other year, Villa Utsigten opens its garden to the public as part of the “Tusen Trädgårdar” event. The garden dates back to the late 1800s, but most of it has been recently landscaped. The garden features vegetables, flowers, berries, and fruit, with the goal of achieving a closed-loop system.

The garden belongs to a summer villa dating from the late 19th century. Many of the plants we have received as gifts or “inherited.” We therefore have a particular fondness for perennials and old plants with a history. Most of the plantings, however, have been added over the past 35 years, though they draw inspiration from earlier times. In the garden and the adjoining greenhouse, we grow a variety of vegetables and flowers, in addition to berry bushes and fruit trees. We are particularly proud of our cabbage patch, where different varieties of cabbage thrive alongside flowers and herbs that keep pests at bay. Interplanting ornamental and edible plants is a recurring theme throughout all our gardens. We also use mulching to conserve water and feed the earthworms. In addition, we happily experiment with new (to us) ideas such as keyhole gardens and Hügelbeds. Nine compost bins provide us with soil and fertilizer, so we’re almost practicing permaculture.
