Godnatt

Godnatt

The fortification towers Godnatt and Kurrholmen were built during the years 1857–63.

Godnatt is the last example of a core tower, a type of fortress that has existed in Sweden and the rest of Europe since the Middle Ages. They became outdated even during the construction period, the masonry was too flimsy for modern artillery. The Kurrholmen and Godnatt fortification towers were built in the years 1857–63. The technical development of artillery, including rifled gun barrels, meant that the masonry could not withstand fire from the new, modern cannons. The fortification plan, which included several similar towers, was therefore never completed.

Godnatt has been used as a lighthouse; several generations of lighthouse keepers lived here in complete isolation.
