Drottningskär Fortress is considered one of the finest examples of Swedish fortification, featuring innovative fortification techniques developed by the military and architect Erik Dahlberg. Construction of the coastal fortress began in conjunction with the establishment of the new naval base at Karlskrona in 1680. Since defending the entrance to the naval harbor was of the utmost importance, fortifications were needed on the two islands of Tjurkö and Aspö; thus, Kungsholm Fort and Drottningskär were built on either side of the entrance.

This guided tour is perfect for those who want to learn more about the site’s history, why Drottningskär Castle was built, and what makes this fortification so unique. You’ll take a group walking tour with one of Karlskrona’s World Heritage guides, who will share more about the magnificent Drottningskär Castle.
