About
In the early 1920s, the Principality of Furstenberg in Donaueschingen had long been a cultural hub and had welcomed guests such as Mozart and Liszt to its concerts over the years.

After World War I, the then prince, Max Egon, took the initiative to establish an annual summer festival featuring music by contemporary composers. The festival committee included Paul Hindemith, among others, and the ambition was for the festival to lead the search for new musical languages – while at the same time being open and accessible to everyone, regardless of social class.
