Shipyard's Day at Mårtensons' at Östar Hästholmen
On Saturday, July 12, from 10 am to 4 pm, the grand gates of the Mårtensson Brothers' historic shipyard and forge will open.
On the island of Östra Hästholmen in Karlskrona's eastern archipelago, the three brothers Hugo, Karl and Göte Mårtensson ran a boatbuilding business between 1934 and 1985. They built more than 1,000 wooden boats. The smallest were 13-foot hunting canoes and the largest were wreckers over 30 feet long. Most of the buildings were spars rigged Blekingsekor to be used for local small-scale fishing in the shallow archipelago. In addition, hunting canoes, wrecking cows and, over time, so-called motor canoes were also built. They were all clinker-built wooden boats, a typical Nordic building technique that was recently included on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage to be preserved for the future. The Mårtensson brothers' boatbuilding company was declared a listed building in 1997.
During the day, squadron rowing with traditional hunting canoes will be organized, local craftsmen with a marine connection will be on site, and fried herring and home-baked goods will be on sale. The Blekingsekorna Klaura and Däkan will be moored at the jetty, along with other traditional sailing and rowing boats and perhaps a motorized sloop. The day is organized by the Mårtensson Boatbuilding Foundation, the Association of Allmogebåtar in Blekinge, FABB, which has its boatbuilding experts on site, and Hästholmen Ytteröns Samhällsförening.
