Andreas Hanson – Conductor
Under the direction of conductor Andreas Hanson, we welcome you to the performance of Marcus Paus’s major musical work about the Norwegian Armed Forces’ highest decoration – The War Cross. The piece was commissioned by the Norwegian Armed Forces and premiered at Harstad Kulturhus on May 10, 2023, with the Norwegian Armed Forces Band – Northern Norway.
The War Cross is a full-length work portraying the events that have led to the awarding of the decoration throughout history. Through this music, we experience the emotions, values, and actions of those who have been honored with the medal. The work is made up of 30 movements, written for various configurations within the band – from solo movements to full orchestral sections where the entire ensemble takes the spotlight.
With The War Cross, Marcus Paus has delivered a truly unique and extensive contribution to Norwegian music history. The piece stands out in both form and scope and is also significant as an original Norwegian composition for wind orchestra.
